New Mexico Woodturners

New Mexico Wood Turners, located in Albuquerque, has over 100 members from the Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and around central New Mexico.  We meet the first Saturday of each month and welcome anyone with an interest in wood turning, from beginner to professional.

Meetings feature presentations on turning techniques, wood selection, tools and safety. Special topics have included vacuum chucks, holiday ornaments, and other unique subjects.  Every meeting includes an informal "Instant Gallery" of member work which you can see in our GALLERY section.

We bring in nationally known guest presenters several times each year, and the club sponsors numerous special events and projects. A popular event is the woodturning exhibition at the New Mexico State Fair, "Expo New Mexico"  held every September. Activities include woodturning competitions, exhibitions, live demonstratons, and videos on a range of turning topics.

President's Corner

— by Ron Bahm

First of all I am humbled by the honor of this situation. About 12 years ago I joined the NMWT to learn what I had trouble accomplishing myself. While this and other hobbies are always a learning process, every day we eliminate a lot of “ways not to do it”!

Woodturning is an art of creative expression BUT there is a vast knowledge of materials and equipment needed.
The NMWT is a strong organization that has come from a great past of leadership and we will continue. I subscribe to “if it ain’t broke – don’t fix it”.

ALL MEMBERS of NMWT need to realize their opinions are important and we are open to all thinking that will advance this group. Please submit your ideas to any of the board by whatever means. We are always open to any ideas that will advance this group.

I personally recommend your membership in the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). The Journal itself is worth the membership plus they have monthly drawings and end of year drawings for major equipment. They provide liability insurance for our official presentations, so if you want to turn at the State Fair, you need to be a member. The search for anything you want to see in the “American Woodturner” dating back to 1986 is a resource of value!

The NMWT is YOUR group so get involved where you can and we will all get to new levels of expertise in our turning.
